Is the I6 enough motivation to move that pig with any alacrity?

Yes, surprisingly well. Coming from the e61 to the x5 is a minor drop in acceleration, but work it a bit you can out accelerate most of the cars in a merge lane. It will also sit happily at 90mph and cruise for 200 miles without breaking a sweat. It doesn't do it effortlessly like the V8 would (think an extra gear kick down on hard acceleration), but it does do it.

I guess it depends on what you’re coming from and to some extent it’s all relative to what your baseline is. A 6-cyl X5 isn’t that bad, but for me it felt bit strained. After having a few 335s, I felt like the turbo I6 got a little strained on a 5er and even more so on X5 given how much additional weight it’s carrying around. That being said, the V8 is overkill. I love our X5 M50 but it doesn’t need this much power. I’d probably be happy with something in the middle.

I'd agree w/ 'Fil's comment, but if you 'strain it' it does get moving well. It is a lot better than the N/A n52 x5. That was a dog. I think it is 'plenty good' for an SUV who, for us, has a primary job of hauling 3ppl, a dog and a weekend full of consumables 280 miles to the lake in under 4 hours.

(For context). Is it still true that Bavarian straight sixes are always more reliable than the V8s?

I'm not sure if there's enough data on the latest iteration of their turbo v8s, but given that they still have a "hot V" design, I'm going to guess there will still be long-term heat related issues that the inline sixes dont have.
