I can't really think of a better first car than this.

My sister got an Autobahn under $28k just a few months ago from somewhere near York PA. IIRC that was around 8k off.

Edit:
I believe it may have been a leftover '16 now that I think more on it.

S doesn't work for us, without the Performance Package (LSD, better brakes, +10hp).

Sport is the minimum on the 2017's for us, plaid seats are cool. SE is better with decent audio. Leather is less necessary but that & moonroof are welcome too. But the lightest, purist spec is Sport.

The new option packages on GTIs are puzzling. I haven't really paid attention.

Cloth seats are right out for us as long as we have kids.

But for a first car, that sub 20K S is a good thing.

Lack of sport(lsd) is a bummer but everything else looks great. Stick, cloth seats and no sunroof. A lot of you complain about the automated cars

Crash ratings are good which IMO is the most important thing in a kids new car .... the price btw is incredible ...$19k

2016 Golf R test drive--no dice

Ok. Target finally acquired.

My wife and I both managed to get down to drive the used one for sale locally. We were both impressed, so it really became a numbers game at that point.

The used one was right out, because they were asking 36K for it...slightly more than they were asking for a brand new 2017 that was discounted off MSRP.

I pointed this out to the salesman and he asked what I would pay for the used 2016. "I dunno...31?"

He said "I can't discount it that much!" Um, you aren't going to sell it for more than the new one, dude. Probably time to reprice.

Anyway, they gave me a decent trade in value on the old one, but the only new one they had was white, which...meh.

So, today I went to a different dealer. Didn't even bother to ask to drive. Pointed vaguely at the red one and said "I'll have that one if the numbers work." They lowballed me on trade but eventually agreed to beat the other dealer's offer.

The used one also had an APR intake. Who knows what kind of tune was on it. Another reason to pass.

As far as driving goes, the new one is nice. Definitely a lot more flexible than the Mark VI in terms of power band. It also revs easier--feels like a lighter flywheel but I bet it's just programming.

I did visit a Ford dealer and sat in an RS. The Recaros look mean but they do not get along with my ass. I asked to drive it and they not surprisingly said no, but just sitting in it was enough to write it off for me.

More driving impressions to follow.

Congrats! I keep pondering getting one too. It's funny when, among new cars, an overpriced VW is the only appealing choice out there that isn't insanely expensive.
