New Clutch proper break in, also what actually burn/hurts the clutch

I feel kind of dumb posting this because I have had so many new cars that were manual but the break in period was not just clutch specific but the entire car so it was normal to take it easy on the entire car for the first 1000 miles.

I just got the NSX back yesterday with another brand new clutch, as posted in another thread the first one had some shudder issue.

Anyway being the entire car has around 50k miles on it I obviously only need to concentrate on breaking the clutch in properly.

The dealer told me to drive it like a grandma the first 1000 miles ... what exactly does this mean and does it really make sense.

I understand when taking off from a stop you don't want to ride the clutch or dump it at a high rpm which I wouldn't do anyway.

What actually hurts a clutch other than that ... is it ok when in gear with the clutch fully engaged to bring the rpm's up high ?

What is your advice on breaking it in and how many miles when it is ... thank you !!

1k seems like a lot of miles to me; I'd probably forget or slip up long before that.

To me, 'taking it easy' would mean not building a lot of heat. So, no hard launches or digs, or rpm blasts, and after some stop and go red light type stuff I'd head out into the country for a stroll.

A couple hundred miles of gentle stop and go driving (aka, drive it in the city for a week). Highway driving has almost no impact on the clutch. Try not to rev it hard/use a lot of throttle during this period as you don't want to cause it to slip.

Ok thanks for responding, so if I'm interpreting this right I am taking it easy for the first 250 to 300 miles all local driving then after I should drive like I normally do ...

Yep. Highway driving is not harmful, it just doesn't count towards break in. It's clutch actuation that is important.
