For the reason of the age of the car and reliability yes I agree. Otherwise no.

Have you driven one?

It's been a long time since I've driven an E39 M5, but they never made me laugh the way the SS did.

Of course I didn't end up buying either one, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Laugh, funny you should say that! I drove a 2016 SS a few days ago, together with the salesman that was selling me a new GMC Sierra 1500. The one I drove was an automatic, kept thinking it might have been much better with a stick, but then laughed more.

My spouse laughed out loud while driving the 718s. The 718 only evoked a slight grin.

I have not and I should. I did see a recent YouTube of Randy Pobst comparing the two on a racetrack where they were within under a second of each other. So beyound the steering the rest should be objective taste.

Curious. Why have you not purchased one if it ilisits such a grin? I would think after you missed the GXP you would have jumped at this chance.

As with the GXP, the timing just wasn't right. I have a big, RWD car that I don't really want to sell in order to get an SS. The SS would have to replace our other car, and my wife would prefer to have AWD on that one (and to have something a little smaller).

Even then, I went to the dealer with the intent of buying one that was advertised as being available for a steep discount off sticker last summer, but when I got there the car was gone.

So, after we missed that unicorn, we bought the new Golf R, which means we're set on cars for at least a year until the Model 3 reservation comes up and I have to decide what to do about that.
