This is for C. Her Golf TDI will be bought back in the next year, whether we like it or not.

JST:

Honestly, from the point of view of subaru's and 40/60 rear-biased awd systems, the haldex Golf R system is likely weak sauce. It certainly will be after my s4 torsen+sports rear diff which kicked out like a RWD car.

Give the GTI SE spec a try, you might be surprised. I hadn't seen the chart below until after my drive. FXD is the front diff on 2017 GTI's sport package and above. It's also on 2015 or 2016's as the performance package, but hard to find.

Just take AF's lead and get a 340 x-drive. I bet if you go to a BMW dealership, they'll throw you and your wife the keys and say "see you in an hour"

Speaking of the GTI, is it normal that 2017s are getting discounted by $7k at my local dealership?

Wow. Which dealer? That might be worth a look.

Ourisman Bethesda. They have a couple of red ones online with manual transmissions for ~$20k. I didn't look around beyond that.

Are those prices real? The one I went to had a listed price $5.5k below MSRP. The price evaporated even as the vehicle was sitting there and we were buyers. We got a decent, no-pressure test drive, so no complaints there, but it didn't seem like they were interested in selling to a cash buyer, that they are resorting to making money off financing.

If there is a 2017 manual GTI SE $6k off msrp, I'm a buyer (for most colors).

These look like S models, which is a little too base model for me. But assuming those are real prices, that's a monster of a deal.
