I thought about it for a brief moment, but figured my dog would not enjoy sitting in the trunk/hatch thing at the back.

Speaking of that, Tom don't you have 2 kids, 2 dogs and a wife? Do you all ever go anywhere all together? If so, how?

I guess I'd test drive the F31 or whatever it is. It is a chunk larger than the E91 and more luxurious. Almost the size of the E61. And since you want AWD and an auto, the only sacrifice is a bit of power.

There are four more or less full-sized humans (the kids are teenagers) and one medium-large dog. We travel places together often.

And the dog usually is not game to ride in the far back (on the occasions we take the wagon). He usually hangs out in the middle of the back seat.

This thread is getting pretty crazy

If I were Josh I'd checkout the MDX ( totally an inside joke )

Seriously though I think you need to test drive a few of these cars and see what you like .... also I know you are BMW bias which I totally get but the other brands out there offer some really great cars.

Thanks Alan. That's my plan- to check out a few options with my wife and lock her in on what she prefers. The hope for this thread was for info from the knowledge base on secondary factors that I wouldn't pick up on a test drive. Things like the diesel engine has issues w/ emissions.

We're justifying this switch on the goal of cost certainty. One reason i'm less comfortable considering other brands right now is lack of experience. I've posted before, our plan was to not make any big purchases for the next 4 yrs until the two girls are out of college.

And i'm surprised the MDX recommendation took this long
