Maybe I've told this story here already...years ago, when I was a full-time post-bacc student, I parked in two-hour designated areas in Georgetown for the day. I learned that I could do this every day and get ticketed an average of 1-2 times per week, which was way cheaper than getting a garage pass anyway. I didn't have a front plate on my Focus, but I made sure to slide it onto the dashboard after parking.

One day I parked and forgot to do that. Oh, and I realized later that my safety inspection had expired the day before. I came back to my car and found three tickets tucked under the windshield wiper. That was a pretty expensive month.

With so much EZ-Pass happening now, it's added another reason for them to be disinclined to drop the front plate requirement.

That was a horribly written sentence. But you all know what I meant.

Guaranteed to get you pulled over by the first cop you pass.

This is what I ended up getting for the X3. I never put a front plate on my Imola M3 and was never pulled over for it (or or for having illegal tint). Do not plan to ever have a front plate on in the X3 unless I receive multiple tickets for it. Most cops I see driving around (not staked out) are too busy taking on the phone to (A) notice a front plate is missing or (B) care enough to turn around to see if the rear plate is from Ohio. Those that are staked out only seem to care about speed.

EZ-Pass toll facilities capture both the front plate (if present) and rear plate, along with the transponder ID. The standard toll reader does all that at any legal highway speed. [Well, 75 MPH at least - I'm not sure if they all support the new 80 MPH limit in Texas.] That means you can blow through the Lincoln Tunnel plaza at 75MPH and they'll have read your tag number and license plate(s).

BTW, my imaginary friend Beavis (like Stuka's friend Butthead ) once took apart an EZ-pass transponder and wired it up to go "Breep!" every time it was read. You'd be amazed at the number of places that read these, including regular urban intersections, random streetlight poles, and so on.

I'm glad that I live in a 1 plate state with no toll roads.

I'm also glad that the state's experiment with mobile and fixed speed cameras on highways has ended. Many of the cities around here are using fewer speed cameras too...

As luck would have it, my registration renewal notice came in the mail today...

I think I'm going to go for the above plate. And I may even personalize it -- I checked and a couple options are avail. One would be an inside joke that only other alums would get (one of the capstone courses of my MBA program has a simulation that my team won, so I would do "1" followed by the acronym of the simulation...)

That may be changing in a lot of places over the next 10-20 years as more and more freeways are built by, leased to, and maintained by private companies in exchanged for being allowed to collect tolls.
