I parked my 1M in a Tesla supercharger spot for five minutes once at a service area on the Merritt in Connecticut. It was the only spot available, and I urgently had to urinate. By the time I got back to my car there was a Tesla waiting for a spot to open. I didn't detect him really giving me the old stink eye, though he would have been perfectly justified in doing so.

That must be the Delaware Supercharger. Love how the parking lines aren't lined up right (the Supercharger should be on the line, not in the middle of the spot...)

There are two different drivetrain setups in AWD cars. One uses the big motor from the P85 in the back and a smaller motor in the front--that's the P85D. The other uses two smaller motors, one in front and one in back. That's the 85D.
Both the P85D and the 85D have higher MPGe ratings on the highway than the RWD 60 or 85, IIRC. That, coupled with the higher top speed of the P85D, led people to think that the gearing of the motors might be different, but until someone cracks one of the gearboxes open no one knows for sure. It may just be the "torque sleep" that ZBB referred to, putting the big motor in the back to "sleep" when it can. The 85D has a higher rated range (and thus a higher overall efficiency) than the RWD 85 (which continues to use a big motor in the back, though without the high power inverter from the P85). The P85D has a lower rated range than the RWD 85, suggesting that despite being better on the highway it takes an efficiency hit elsewhere. Non-Teslas parking in a Supercharger spot fill me with a white hot rage. The analogy of me parking the Tesla in front of a set of gas pumps and wandering in to use the bathroom is perfectly apt. That said, I will forgive momentary transgressions for brief calls of nature, so long as there is no other choice. |
