It does give my wife and I a chance to go down to our more local dealership and compare G05 X5s in I6 and V8 configs and X3M4.0 to figure out what she really wants with no pressure.
The N63 is great in a performance aspect. If you drive one you will want it. The G05 50i was eventually dropped all together for the M50i. FYI, you do not want to own any variant of the N63 out of warranty. Research… it has plenty of well known, documented issues.

The X3 M40i is great and the B58 (B58B30O1) to-date has been bullet proof.

Tough choices Josh, they are all good. I don't know the engine code for what I have in the M550 but I can tell you the engine is awesome. I rarely drive my daughters X3 but I did the other day and it always surprises me how substantial the car feels plus they really did a nice job on the interior, the only downside is it has idrive 7 light which is missing a couple of things like auto start and no recording feature on the camera's.

I found out the buy out today on the Q7 and if I buy it now I only save $270 so I am debating whether to buy it now or just wait until September.

BTW it seems you can still order BMW's and the wait isn't too bad.

Alan, your M550 has a TU version of the N63. Same engine in a M50 X5 or X7. BMW has been using the N63 V8 since 2008. Allegedly a new V8 is in the works.

Yes, no issues ordering a new BMW, but quite a bit of decontenting is still going on with some customer’s orders arriving with items missing and with no advanced notice to the selling BMW Center from NA.

I guess you can refuse delivery. But you’re screwed if you really needed the car.

Yea, one option we are toying with is ordering a new x3 early next year and picking it up at Spartansburg. We signed Nate (our 16yr old son) up for a 2 day teen driving course down there and thought it would be cool to pick up the car at the same time. I'm afraid to do that with what I've read about orders showing up missing features. I'd be really pissed. That's also why i'm kind of zeroing in on 2019 / early 2020 cars since they were made before the world was turned upside down.

It will be nice to go to our local BMW shop tomorrow with no pressure and just spend some time checking out the x5 and x3 and narrowing down what we really want without *needing* to buy something immediately.

SCA - its my understanding the TU2 post 2016 version had significant improvements in long term reliability to the initial version of the N63 and the first TU. Is the TU2 plagued with issues too? i wasa reading this article recently: https://bmwtuning.co/bmw-n63-vs-n63t...tu2-vs-n63tu3/

Exactly…

Edit: Center Delivery you could, but depending on the selling center you may have to forfeit your deposit. So long as one does not order a unusual color combo it should not be an issue.

Performance Center Delivery does not provide you the option of refusal as the vehicle must be paid for in full (cash) or financing/leasing finalized prior to PCD arrival. The selling dealer must complete and send required paperwork to the PC verifing such. Once that is completed the vehicle is yours whether you like it or not.

To a degree, BMW simply band-aids the issues as they still tend to be problematic once out of warranty and past 60-70k miles. S63s, which are derived from the N63 are problematic as well, but given that they are a M developed engine you can use your imagination as to the cost of any out of warranty repair.

Not a direct response to the conversation, but just sharing a thought based on the thread title that for a variety of reasons I am just not excited about new cars anymore. I like the ones I have and the ones I want you can't get and/or cost stupid money.

We weren't sure about the permit vs license thing. April might be an option since football won't be as crazy then. Not sure when his spring break is
