I drive around a lot with a bike attached to a tow hitch. Amazing how much of a gas mileage hit it takes when driving on the freeway, probably 4-5 mpg. Bike on the back of our 4runner brick doesn't seem to effect it all but I guess not surprising though.

On my 23mile commute (90% hwy) I average 31-33mpg. I usually drive fast (75-80) but with an eye on efficiency. If I drive faster or drive more aggressively, it will drop to <30mpg. The moment you start to drive sporty it goes down sharply. I can tell you that in hwy-only driving it gets well in excess of 32mpg and probably closer to >35mpg (@ >75mph).

I'll take this opportunity to bitch at how slowly revs drop on this car. I'm sure that is why shifting is so easy, but wow. It takes an eternity from higher rev ranges. I'll also reiterate how annoying it is that that blipping the revs off idle is laggy. Maybe a crazy-heavy flywheel is to blame for both scenarios (?), but I am amazed this doesn't come up often.

The roof rack (even empty) will make fuel economy take a pretty decent hit on the hwy for sure. Things behind the vehicle are much easier on fuel economy.

I think it has to do something with emissions

If it enables the smooth driving and high fuel economy I'll take it on a car that is not my fun car, but it is annoying. Although it's only aggravating off idle or when revving up in 1st gear. Once moving it's not bad.

Is it known if the new R will come with a 6 speed manual?

as JST said yes but I think you need to wait for the 8.5 in which they hopefully fix the interior mess, i.e. lack of buttons. It is on my radar
