On roadtrips with my family in the 70s and 80s I played handheld electronic games and listened to a walkman

Do you guys turn down the stereo when you're looking for an address or parking spot, too?

I do remember pre phone and internet times when I was growing up we did annoy the crap out of our parents while they were driving. So I suppose some isolation and distraction with kids being on there devises helps.

But honestly who needs a theater in the back seat like the upcoming BWM addition in the YouTube.
When we were kids, even with front bench seats, we were riding around in the back seats of vehicles that did not wall off the front and rear with massive head rest/restraints, front passengers (in many cases) probably were not using three point harnesses, etc.

My point being that it was physically easier to have conversations in the cars we were in 30, 40, and 50 years ago.

True story. In 2006, Alex, Nick and I drove to Detroit for NAIAS. Nick was too young to drive the rental, so he sat in the back of the V6 Charger with his book and barely said a word while the grown ups did all the driving and occupied the front seats.

In 2006, I'm pretty sure I was doing most of my book reading on a PDA.

How the fuck is an old man like me supposed to remember? I wasn't told my recall of that detail would be tested 16 years later.

Interestingly, a talk to your rear seat passenger's feature made Doug's list of 7 cool new features every new car should have this year.

I encourage my kids to learn to be bored. I give them a break so that they can be on 1/2 the time, otherwise, it's healthy to look out the window when they don't feel like talking. I usually ask them for directions on how to get places. I happily make the wrong turns if they mess up.
