So I’m not sure how much he actually had to do with some of the novel ideas that were introduced in the model s. I do think he gets credit for willing to push the limits when it comes to hardware and bragging about what the hardware can do.

Tesla was founded in July 2003. Musk became the majority shareholder in Feb 2004 -- during their Series A funding round. While he didn't become CEO until 2008 after Tesla nearly failed during the financial crisis, he has had influence with them since shortly after the founding. White Star was publicly announced in June 2008 -- and was basically the first example of Musk promoting future product to help save the company...
