Whenever I see a 996/997 cabrio i just don’t like that rear hump that covers the convertible roof bits and pieces.

Yep. I'd go so far as to say I don't think Porsche got the design of water-cooled era 911s in general right until the 991.

I can agree with that.

This wouldn’t be the first time, but the caveat is that a rear engined car has no place in the modern era.

The move from the G (long hood) cars in the mid to late 80s to the 964 was odd. In the sense that the 964 is generally hideous, heavy and slow.

They got the looks right with the 993.

Their hands were tied with the 997 because they were still using the 996 footprint, which limited wheelbase and width. So it stands to reason that the 991 with a clean sheet design is the car they really wanted for the 997 gen.

Kinda makes sense since it probably wasn't until after the 997 launched that Porsche started to be in decent shape financially owing to the successful launch of the cayenne a couple years earlier. The 991 was probably the first 911 model in a long time to have benefitted from a healthy development budget. The 996 was conceived in an era when Porsche was teetering on bankruptcy...and before that they hadn't really fully committed to the idea of keeping the 911 around in the modenr era (so were content to make fairly minimal updates).

I don’t fully understand how a car that uses all aluminum panels with a chassis that is 70% aluminum still weighs 3400 pounds in non-awd S trim?

That is only about 150 pounds less than a piggish 991 Turbo.

Almost identical to 991.2 S:

Their target was likely keeping weight the same while increasing rigidity and safety

Oh, I disagree. I actually think the proportions of the 996 are really nice (though the headlights, taillights, and interior are gross). The 997 is just about perfect.

The 991/992 are too blobbish for my taste. They're basically 928s but without the stylistic courage.
