80 degrees and sunny here in ATL. Drove my son in the 2 with the top down to get some crazy bubble tea for him. Glorious.

Grilling steaks for us tonight.

I wonder if a cottage industry of retrofitting 6spds in PDK 911s will crop up similar to the e46 M3 and F430.

Maybe.

The SMG E46 is both an extremely easy retrofit, and also often similar to or less costly than fixing an SMG issue. It only requires a few parts that are either available new, or can be salvaged cheaply out of any E46. Heck, if you use a CAE style shifter (I don't recommend for a street car, but you can), you don't even have to pull the transmission.

I can't speak to the F430, but the 911 PDK is actually good. Unless you start ending up with a truly monumental price delta, it's hard to see.

One thing that may drive some demand for this is the fact that Porsche states the PDK transmission is not repairable. There have been some reports of 991.1 cars needing $16k transmission replacements.

That pretty much applies to all PDK/DSG/DCT vehicles. IIRC, it's about $10k to replace the DSG in a B8 S4. (I looked into it because my mom's DSG was slowly on its way out. They ended up selling the car.) So far as I can tell, virtually no one manual swaps those.

Porsche people seem to hate transmission swaps. I mean, tiptronic 993s absolutely cry for a swap. The 4HP22 is completely unsuited to a sports car. And yet, you either get penalized or get no resale benefit from the swap.

...also, I think it's worth noting that a 991 manual swap is not going to be cheaper than a $16k transmission replacement.

Was idly playing around with Edmund's "true cost to own" feature over the weekend and thought this was interesting. The projected 5 year ownership cost of a new base 911 is only a few k more than a 2017 base 911: (86k vs 82k)

https://www.edmunds.com/porsche/911/2017/cost-to-own/

I'd had a hunch that when it comes to 911s there might not be as big a benefit to buying a lightly used one vs a brand new one due to the relatively slow depreciation.
