where in NY?? I bought my new ford truck in Middletown NY with no problems, the dealer just transfered my old plates.

You do need to go to inspection, but just go to the exit lane. They will give you a new car inspection sticker good for 4 years.

Dealer should charge, and take care of NJ sales tax (less trade in, if you are trading)

Yeah, the dealer should know what to do in a place like NJ/NY/CT--there's lots of interstate shopping there. It's like DC; you can buy a car in any dealer around here (MD, VA, DC) and they all do the process seamlessly for any of the jurisdictions.

It's very much in the dealers' interest to make the process as painless as possible.

Yup, that's how I did my 325xiT back in 2002 - bought it in NY (BMW of Bayside), they collected the sales tax and switched my plates over, and gave me some sort of state form that I traded at the NJ inspection station for a new car sticker (they inspected for tint before giving me the sticker). And I didn't have to pay any documentation / runner fees to the dealer.

I sure hope you aren't considering an RX8. Those things are WAY underpowered.
