Are you shitting me? You have a black panther? Small world. I just had a modded MZ Baghira black panther dropped off this afternoon, literally. Here's a picture of the bike the previous owner had taken

I rode it around the block real quick, but it's not plated yet so I'm going to have to wait until it's legal to get real seat time.

How do you like it?

the short answer is, i loved it.

the long answer is more complicated. i got my first one in 2000 and it had electrical issues. it left me stranded out on rides a couple times. it was the first bike i ever had to tow. the last time it broke down, the dealer kept it for many months, replaced the entire harness and eventually gave up. they ended up giving me a new 2001 model.

i kept that one for a while, and it was an absolute blast to ride--on the proper roads. ridiculously fun. it's not as super-moto as can be, but it's very unique. eventually i had to sell a bike, and the panther lost. aside from being very focused, i was really worried about the company going under and not being able to get parts. this was right before the MZ1000 came out and i thought that was going to be a flop.

btw they have a habit of dumping all their fuel on your garage floor it you forget to turn of the petcock. PM me if you want the fix for it.

MZ Black Panther

Which is really just an all Black MZ Baghira. MZ is a relatively small East German outfit. Not very well known, but these bikes have a small cult like following.

Looks like a Japaneese-clone mill.

Not the whole bike, but the engine is very Honda-esque...

well there was a time when the panther was the only "full height" version--the other colors were all on shorter suspension. i think now you can get high or low in any color, no?

the engine is the old faithful Yamaha 660cc (XTZ?) engine.

Oh, I get what you were saying now. The engine looks to be Japaneese. Which is correct.

As mentioned below, it's a purpose built yamaha 660. I believe the intake/exhaust, head were designed for MZ and later adapted to the Raptor ATV.
