E39 M5 Dimming Mirror Fix

So this shit finally happened and I really don't want to pay $500+ for a new rear view mirror.

I did some research and found this fix and ordered the glass from the UK. ($138 shipped)

http://www.mirrorjohn.com/How_To_Fix.php

Reading through the fix it seems pretty simple. The only part that I am a little scared to do is taking the mirror body itself apart. He mentions you might break some of the clips. What happens if you break to many.

Does anyone know anyone who has attempted this type of fix on their E46 M3 or E39 M5?

Pretty sure there's a guy who fixes these for a reasonable cost. I really need to send mine off before it leaks.

I'll let you know how the fix goes. This guys offers to do the fix as well but I don't want to be without my mirror for any extended period of time.

This JUST happened today. I got off the ferry from SF coming back to Marin from work, got in my car and the glass was two different colors. Just all the sudden. So weird.

I shipped mine out to the (not sure if it was the same one as the link above) fix guy right before I sold it. The guy did a nice job and turn around was quick. If you want the contact info, I can look it up. Came highly recommended from m5board

Did the oil leak out and damage anything? If it hasn't yet, take it down immediately. The oil will eat the trim and stain the leather. No fixing that.

No I haven't taken it down as I drive the car almost every day even if short distances. I already ordered the replacement glass from that link so I will do the repair as soon as I get it. Sounds like bren's has been that way since 2012 with no leaking.

I get it though and I would be super pissed if that happens.

I'd really suggest you take the mirror down and drive without it until you get it fixed. Your call, but you might want to search M5board for some pics of the damage or at least ask over there how often after it turns that it leaks.

I had a few drops come out of mine and it permanently stained the leather on the center console and pock marked the trim and it was only on for a couple of seconds before I wiped it up.

Bren has yours leaked at all since it got discolored? Have you done anything to stop it from leaking until you fix it?

Some of them never leak, some of them leak quickly. Personally, i'd suck it up and take the mirror down.d

Nope. Hasn't leaked and I haven't done anything.

So yeah, now it's sure to ruin my interior this afternoon.
