I saw a nice one the other day with the 6spd and sport package.

Bigger isn't happening. And it's better than sticking them in the back of the E46.

Right.

It's a shame you can't get a newer 5 series. Best I can tell, 2010 is the last model available with a manual in AWD.

I'm not sure "leg room" and "3 series" go together. I'd be looking at 7 series, which are crazily comparable in price to used 3 series because of their depreciation curve.

5 series GT?

Good call on the 7 series. It's really amazing how cheap the used ones are relative to their price when new.
