I knew well enough to stay away from the V8 in the X5 due to the whole "customer care campaign", and my research suggested the diesels have a whole slew of emission control issues. I never figured out if the customer care thing actually improved the n63 and if the updated one was more reliable.
I'm a broken record on this, but the n63 is fantastic but has some warts. The turbos get way too hot which causes a multitude of issues. I had the engine out services a while back and it has been fine since. The newer, post 2014 v8s are apparently much improved.

The customer care campaign didn't really address the fundamental root cause - placement of the turbos caused a slew of heat related failures. It seemed like more of a bandaid by retrofitting supposedly "upgraded" parts such as timing chain tensioner, injectors, etc. Maybe these updated parts are truly able to withstand the higher temps - but most likely they just bought BMW enough time to get the original owners through their lease and warranty period. They've also been pretty aggressive in offering incentives to those owners to upgrade to newer models. Supposedly, with the n63tu, they slightly altered the location of the turbos to address the heat issues.

Next time, I'm going to take the f10 down so Nick can give the sluggish but comfy sedan a try with 6-speed and the good suspension.

Except for the "under no circumstances will the next car I purchase have anything less than 4 doors" box.
