Woof. Let's hope they've learned some lessons and implemented changes in later models. Like the 2 Series....

There's a good comparison in there of the E46 to the E90 that suggests the latter is much better in this respect.

The structural integrity of the E90 seems, um, way better than the E46. Not that this should be surprising in the least. Finite element modeling has come a long way since the E46 was in the early design stages.
The E90 also doesn't really drive at all like an E46 does. That's both good and bad. |

FWIW, there are reports of E36 RACPs cracking as well. No idea if they're as widespread of an issue, probably not.

Hey, do any of you E46 owners have a seriously slow rear defroster? I was willing to forgive an obscenely long wait with frosty windows, but the other day I was trying to clear up a little bit of light condensation and the lines had barely started to clear before it shut off at ten minutes.

I don't remember needing to use it on my fair weather driver in a long time. I assume it works. The OCD me would probably know that it doesn't work if it didn't.

I've actually worked a fair amount on the car lately but I haven't been super motivated to post. I did pull the old flywheel last night, finally. I had made a flywheel locking tool that I use on the (single-mass) flywheel on my race car, but it doesn't work on the stock dual-mass unit so I had to rig up something else.
Pretty amazing to me that after all these miles there is no noticeable wear on the flywheel friction surface. The dual-mass springs are a little on the weak side compared to the new one, but not such that it seems near failure. |
