I didn't realize it was a 4cyl, that is very underwhelming. Ultimately, this would be primarily a highway cruiser for us, which makes no sense. We will probably go take one for a drive this weekend, with any luck it will be harsh and miserable and get this out of my head.

You can get a 4cyl or 6cyl, and they’re even releasing a $$$ V8

In that vein, I drove my ILs Expedition this weekend and I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone would voluntarily subject themselves to that kind of punishing ride and poor handling in a family vehicle. I suspect the Defender will be better than that (though...maybe not?), but with luck it won't be.

I am not sure what they use, but I imagine the new Defender has air springs like our LR4 does. Our LR4 has an excellent ride despite weighing nearly 3 tons. It also doesn't handle poorly at normal speeds. Apparently the lower control arm bushings take a beating and need replacement by 60k miles, but people have gone out of their way to complement the ride. Ditching the crap OEM Contis a few years ago improved the ride that much more. And our SUV is 8 years old with nearly 50k miles.

Front and rear independent suspension help a lot too

Yeah the defender drives really well out on the road just like it’s Range Rover and discovery platform mates. And yeah the 4 door versions all have air suspension

You can get an inline 6 as well. We have that engine in our RRS and it’s great. Smooth, no noticeable turbo lag (has a mild hybrid system like Mercedes) and pretty efficient on the highway.

My neighbor who made me (slightly) jealous with his good looking Defender, likely a 2022 model as it's the 2-door box, has already lemoned it. YMMV.

The expedition has independent suspension all the way around, too, and it still feels like a buckboard but one that thing was poorly reconstructed from three wrecked buckboards.

This is the kind of post I was hoping for. All these others praising how great it drives wasnt helping my rational side at all.
