Cadillac moving to SoHo NYC

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/24/bu...-new-york.html

Relatively old news, I know, but I was just thinking...

...that this is pretty stupid.

How does it help to have the top management of a car company located in what is arguably the most car-unfriendly part of the most car-unfriendly city in America? None of them will be driving to work. Perhaps they'll be driven, but they won't be driving. Won't that just encourage a distance from the product that can spell doom?

I understand them wanting to leave Detroit and escape the gravity of the rest of GM. But fucking SoHo? WTF?

Los Angeles, sure. That would make sense. Or even Austin or Dallas or Houston. Hell, even Chicago. But lower Manhattan? For a car company? It boggles the mind.

Agree. I predict major suckage from Cadillac when the next cycle of cars hit the market (say ~4-5 years from now). We already know the the ex-Audi and ex-Infiniti guy will be changing the model names to gibberish. Now they will be signed off by people who don't drive (just when Caddy's designers had started caring about feel again...)

At least they didn't get offices in the Chrysler building...

Maybe they moved there to do R&D on a Smart competitor project?

Even the GM building in midtown (across from the Plaza... the building the big Apple store is in) would be better than SoHo, from a driver's perspective.

I don't get it.

This just off the wire.....................GM hints at Recall on Caddy move.

And in another not so surprising move..................SoHo district petitions to be renamed SoLo if GM Recall campaign is thwarted.

OMG, seriously? I guess they'll start offering an armor reinforcement/bulletproof glass package on the WRX.

Agreed

What a weird move plus the rent in NYC is insane, I know they are a huge company but still overhead in any business has to be a factor.

I remember when Car And Driver magazine was located at One Park avenue - it was an outgrowth of the madmen era, and the then editors and writers had roots in the Madison Avenue culture.

The original Cannonball cross country rally left from a parking garage down there - and you could sometimes find David E Davis at the old Lock, Stock and Barrel in Darien, CT.
