Is the I6 enough motivation to move that pig with any alacrity?

Yes, surprisingly well. Coming from the e61 to the x5 is a minor drop in acceleration, but work it a bit you can out accelerate most of the cars in a merge lane. It will also sit happily at 90mph and cruise for 200 miles without breaking a sweat. It doesn't do it effortlessly like the V8 would (think an extra gear kick down on hard acceleration), but it does do it.

I guess it depends on what you’re coming from and to some extent it’s all relative to what your baseline is. A 6-cyl X5 isn’t that bad, but for me it felt bit strained. After having a few 335s, I felt like the turbo I6 got a little strained on a 5er and even more so on X5 given how much additional weight it’s carrying around. That being said, the V8 is overkill. I love our X5 M50 but it doesn’t need this much power. I’d probably be happy with something in the middle.

Indeed. And we had the 3.0 X5...

I'd agree w/ 'Fil's comment, but if you 'strain it' it does get moving well. It is a lot better than the N/A n52 x5. That was a dog. I think it is 'plenty good' for an SUV who, for us, has a primary job of hauling 3ppl, a dog and a weekend full of consumables 280 miles to the lake in under 4 hours.

Yep. After living with the lame-o N/A six cylinder for 7 years, I'd be totally happy to drive your car! And, frankly, at speed even it wasn't so bad--but getting to speed was a bit painful.

Anything is better than the pentastar 3.6L V6.

(For context).

Is it still true that Bavarian straight sixes are always more reliable than the V8s?

I haven't heard anything horrible about the turbo V8s....yet.

I'm not sure if there's enough data on the latest iteration of their turbo v8s, but given that they still have a "hot V" design, I'm going to guess there will still be long-term heat related issues that the inline sixes dont have.
