So, still trying to sell to Carvana. They are severely understaffed and this part of the process takes longer than it should. There is additional documentation they want re: payoff, but it's not clear what or what format they want it in. Can't get them on the phone...It's one of those, "give us your number and we'll call you back" things and I missed the callback 6 hours later.

OTOH, I spoke to a couple dealers today with cars inbound. They both indicated they would be very close to Carvana's offer. Plus there's a $1k trade assist MFR->DLR incentive right now, so trading in for $500 less than Carvana would be about $1600 to the good on the new car.

Man, you can't help but keep finding money under rocks on this chase. Pretty soon you'll be they will be giving you a v8 and cash in the trunk. It's awesome

I think I was wrong about a "trade" incentive. Instead, I think there may be a new $2k in trunk money, but possibly with some kind of limitations.

This is ALWAYS the right answer.

Or, you negotiate the new car, telling them NO trade, then you say, BTW, what will you give me in trade.

If you negotiate the set, they will take a cut out of both sides (sale price of new and trade in price of the used).

COVID notwithstanding, that's old advice that is not very accurate or helpful any more. If it ever was. At its best, it was from a time when used car operations were supplementary and supportive of new car sales, not the major profit centers they are now. In the current COVID environment, they want to buy your late model used cars a whole lot more than they want to sell you their new cars...that they don't have to sell.

Same as it ever was, they get the piece they want on both ends either way.

Sigh.

So, just for the record. I am doing everything I can to make this sale happen. Carvana...um, I don't know.

I will write something up at the end of this either way, but they are not making this easy.

There's one of those CarMax dump-your-car depots near me. It is absolutely bustling lately.
