Wasn't the rap always that although neither of those cars had much power, the S2000 in particular really needed to be thrashed into high revs (kick in the VTEC, yo) in order to get out of its own way?

Aside from a brief encounter with a Miata in the early '00s I haven't driven either, so I don't have any relevant first-hand experience to relay, just remembering what I've read.

We drove both when shopping the Z3 in 2001. I hated both of them.

It depends upon your definition of "get out of its own way". If you're the type that drag races away from every stoplight, then you might feel this way. But I always felt that the car was very sprightly at any RPM.

It does take a bit to get used to the short gearing. Rowing gears in that gearbox is very rewarding, though. So never a chore.

I do enjoy rowing through the gears. And it's good to know that it's not too shabby off the line.

I would go for the Miata any day over the S2000 .. I had a low mileage perfect S2000 which I bought online and I couldn’t wait for the title to come in the mail so I could get rid of it.

I found the car was so noisy all of the time and it was not a nice noise, it was irritating ... it didn’t matter if you were driving calmly or getting on it, the sounds weren’t good it didn’t matter if the top was up or down in fact if I think about it, it was more irritating with the top up and when the top was down the wind would hit me in the back middle of my head. It was just strange how much I couldn’t stand this car.

When I sold it the person who bought it was from Canada and had like a crazy day long drive home. When I called him to see how things went I was expecting him to tell me he hated the car but surprising he loved it

If I spent 20 minutes in that car I was tortured and this guy who was bigger then me physically spent an entire day in it... oh I forgot to mention the car felt too small also.

I've read that too. The S2K motor is not unlike an inline-4 motorcycle engine, in that it makes most of its power in the upper range of the powerband.

Winding one out would be pretty fun though.....but I suppose that could get tiresome.
