The Allroad would still get me a new car (that I would hope could go for the long haul of my practical needs) while saving $20-$30k in the direction of something fun in the future. Ex keeps trying to sway me to get the Model Y. She says even her Porsche feels lagging and slightly less fun to her these days in comparison—except for the fact that the roof goes down. Edit: Well, crap. The new battery/gas combo engine removes the spare tire in the Allroad. Last edited by wdc330i; 10-27-2020 at 06:03 PM. |

Research leads to even more frustrations with car makers:
If I want a new A4 Allroad = no spare tire; questionable new mild hybrid tech If I want a new X3 M40i with M diff = forced into performance summer run flats. And, then, regret I didn’t wait for the LCI with the updated iDrive in the 2022 models next year. Guess how I can get exactly what I want? Yep, a la carte Porsche. For $$$. If I order a Porsche, I’ve been lured into wanting a GTS with PTV and Sport Chrono...Since the Macans are going all electric, I wonder how well such a spec would hold its value (provided a meteor doesn’t fall on it?) |

You wouldn’t seriously let OE tires prevent you from buying a car, would you? I can get the idrive regret, but tires? Yeesh

I agree with taking the issue seriously; a new set of tires is, what, 1500 bucks? Plus having to either sell or store the original ones. It’s a pain in the ass and a big expense.
Having said that, in GA I’d definitely just live with the summer tires until I used them up. |

It’s only a hassle if you let it be. Storage could be a concern if there’s no space (need to remember this the next time we talk about how charging electric cars in dense urban environments where people have to park on streets isn’t a concern since other people can charge in their own garages after spending $1500 on a home charger and wiring upgrades). But, it takes an hour or two tops to have the tires you want swapped on. Hardly a hassle in he context of cars. I think you all know how frugal I am on car purchases, but even if it was $1500 net out of pocket to resolve the tire concern, it’s kind of a rich to call it a “big expense” for a $60k car that up charges you $550 minimum for any color other white, don’t you think? But yeah, I agree. Running the summer run flats until you get fed up with them or use them up is the way to go. The “problems” with them are likely more in the head than on the street.

I also really question the need for the M diff on an X3.

WDC's Practical Car Perseveration
Yea I was thinking the same thing. The X3 is pretty competent but it’s not a 240 or 340, I just don’t see the value in the M diff. I think a regular X3 M40 would be pretty good. I also don’t think some of the other comps under consideration (A4 all road) are offered in the most performance-oriented config those brands offer either so it feels comparable?

Just trying to avoid the woulda/shoulda regrets. If I know it's out there, not getting it rankles. First world problems. There would be some stupid irony in having all seasons (which I just replaced) on my convertible and summers on my SUV... Edit: It's cute how everyone presumes I'm going to get the X3... |
