Topgear Rates all M Cars
These are pretty much spot on with my own personal assessment, but I'm sure some will have their own tender spots with some of their findings, particularly the more contemporary offerings.

I don't understand how the late M6 is a hit. I kind of understand the F90 M5.

Ratings seem about where I would expect, though honestly I'm not sure how you criticize the F80 M3 and praise the F87 M2 when the cars are so similar under the skin. And the F80 is just not a worse car than the E90.
Idk, maybe my view would be different if we could get the Giulia here with a stick. |

Ultimately, I think how you rank these depends on the lens you use, and I think their assessment is all over the map. From a pure driving fun perspective, I agree that pretty much all new ones are not great. I particularly put blame on the 2-door M3/4 because they are too heavy for what they offer and compared to the competition. But I think the M3 sedans have all been pretty good in some if not all ways. The E90 had to be driven hard to get good performance but also sound great. The F80 (in later ZCP trim, particularly) is a pretty damn good sports sedan with real practicality and a MT. Early ones did it all. Newer M3's have to be judged by their intended use, IMO. But all M's with an X on it are dumb. |

I also kind of a part of my anatomy about the M6. The F80 was beleaguered with some early run issues, but otherwise I thought the end of the life model was more than tolerable.

The 1M and the E9x don't get that in the same way because they are so different. Both dramatically better and dramatically worse than the other in different aspects.

Apparently Clarkson likes the new one.

Tantalizing and frustrating: No RWD or manual in the convertible.
