The team was fast to douse water everywhere as well.

Better to soak a teammate than to allow them to be burnt alive.

So, that isn't the equivalent of dousing the coach with gatorade?

Is it me, or is he not using the outside 1/4 of his right front tire?

I saw that as well and thought, "that's silly... they should be using some absorbent or extinguishing material". But then I remembered they use methanol/ethanol and so water is perfect. Shows you how much I know about racing.

IIRC, the first two pics are from one of Sam Hornish Jr.'s pit stops. He saw the fuel man pulling back from the car, assumed the hose would go with him, and took off. Unfortunately that was not the case. The buckets are full of water and were used to douse the fuel man in case of fire, which is appropriate because (as mentioned already) Indy cars use a methanol/ethanol mix and water would be totally appropriate for extinguishing such a flame.

As it turns out, Hornish won the race.

Considering that shot is of the pits, those are most likely fresh tires that just had a quick scrub-in prior to their first use.
