We have quite a few local exotics and hyper cars running Montana tags as well as RV/Motor Homes.

Edit: There is even a local Lime Rock Edition E92 running a Montana tag.

We drove past it, I didn’t really take it in too much. Definitely has a presence. Blue looked ok

While doing the "full time RV" thing, I used to chuckle inside about people using a Montana LLC.

We "lived" in South Dakota, was able to do all the tax loophole stuff without hiring someone to set up a LLC.

Heck, I could not have done what I did with turning my Volvo 780 into an oversized pickup truck if I had gone the LLC route. I never needed a CDL for my Volvo with the South Dakota registration. Anyone with a regular drivers license could operate it

I don't know about other states, but here in NJ they ding you if they notice a car with out-of-state plates parked in the same area for 60 days (or if someone turns you in): https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/drivertopics/movetonj.htm

When I had the Atom (non-Montana but out-of-state tags) I kept it in the garage and had a license plate cover that read "404" with a "Remove Before Flight" streamer in case anyone peeked in.

I can truthfully say that the only time I drove it in NJ was to leave NJ (or return).

I also used the 404 plate on track days. Some insurance companies have spotters at tracks where they take down license plates and VINs to void policies (flat out at Laguna Seca doesn't count as HPDE). Fortunately, the VIN plate on my Atom is welded on one of the four main frame tubes in a place where you have to contort to look at it.

Yes, VA also charges personal property tax on cars “garaged” in VA regardless of whether they’re registered. I got dinged for it when I lived here for a summer internship and still had a MI plate.

In practice, wealthy LLC owners do what Terri did and park their cars in private garages, making it hard to tag them. The law (as with most laws) gets enforced mainly against poorer folk who have to park in public lots or garages.

What can you do? It pisses me off that people who could easily afford it evade taxes this way, but at least around here the people that do it feel no shame.
