Aging tires

How many of you believe the claims that tires should be replaced at the 6-year mark, regardless of whether the tread depth is still good?

Are you starting to see any dry rot on the tires? Some tires still look good after a few years, while some start to look really nasty.

No, they look okay. But several have been patched over the years and one is losing pressure again. Plus, they are terrible Eagle RS-As, which have mediocre traction in the best of circumstances.

After 6 years I would expect they'd be hard as rocks even if there isn't any noticable dry rot.

Not that I've ever had tires last 6 years (2 years being the most I've ever seen on my cars) but I'd replace them.

Is this on the wagon?

They are 17" all-season non-runflats, right? Based on all of those factors, and the fact that a decent set of replacement tires probably isn't that expensive, I'd say go for it.

They are 17" all-seasons., but they are not run-flats. The car has a compact spare, which if I were being extra cautious, I would replace, too. These are for the wagon, which is AWD, so even if I buy just a single tire, I'm looking at shaving tread.

6 year rule is a golden rule in my lifestyle. I am talking mostly about RV's and towables that sit for a while, then are run at highway speeds for a while. tread seperation is a serious and expensive problem in the RV world.

I don't think I have ever had car tires last that long! 40-50K miles then bye-bye, no matter how old

I've never replaced a tire due to age alone, but I have replaced crummy OE tires well before they were worn out.

Part of why there is so much tread left is because the wagon sees a short commute and we switch out to snow tires for half the year. The OEM Eagles were made in 2005. I'll have to scope out the winter tires for age, as well, alas. I'm more concerned nowawadays with the highway commute to the weekend house.

The 5 "best sellers" for your car on Tirerack.com range in price from $424 to $752 for a set of four. At that price, I wouldn't bother with replacing just one or two and possibly shaving tires.... they're cheap enough to just throw a whole new set on.

Conti DWS is $564 for four
Mich Pilot A/S is $752 for four
OEM Goodyears are $664 for four
