TD (and others):

At a dealer near here, I saw a 2007 Boxster (not S), silver on cocoa special leather, CPO, 30k miles, 5-speed, 17" wheels with the nice fat tire look that I like. $31.9!

I was shopping around to see what there is in left over 09 Carrera and Caymans. I really fell for a silver 09 Cayman S, full leather, PASM, sports seats. Trying not to think about it.

I don't think you should get a 986S that old unless:

a) you're getting it from someone you know or reputable 1st/2nd owner (e.g. JV)
b) you're really good at fixing cars, you don't care.

I would take a base 987 without question over a 986S. Less torque, but much better interior and still a very drivable, purist-satisfying wonderful car.

There are many, many things that it could be from that do not involve a fat ass. In fact, a fat ass is almost certainly not whatever the reason was.

Whatever the reason, though, I am left wondering why the reason was important enough to raise.

The seat is excessively worn. I'd pay less for that and be happy to save the money for something that doesn't matter.

Others, I suppose, may not be able to get past the possible potential of a fat ass having previously sat where they would like to now place their asses (whether skinny, normal, or fat sized themselves). I guess it is somehow soiled or something despite the previous ass having been (presumably) fully clothed. And Imagonna finish there lest I make the natural leap of wondering how those people can use internally consistent logic when it comes to selecting sexual partners...

OK, so the latest thing that's giving me pause is the IMS issue, which I hadn't focused closely on until I really started thinking about pulling the trigger on a Boxster.

I know we've discussed it on this board before, but the search function doesn't let me look for three letter words.

The consensus on rennlist seems to be that there are IMS issues with all M96 and M97 Boxsters, but that there was a running change in '06 that (may have) improved things. Of course, most of the posts on this issue are basically just regurgitations of the foregoing sentence, with little or no elaboration or attribution.

The true risk of an IMS failure seems pretty hard to pin down--there's a couple of people who have very scary stories and some people who are making money selling retrofits, but the whole thing is murky, at best. People who've had their engines replaced under warranty after they get all 'splodey are kind of blase about it, but obviously the idea of a 20K repair bill on an out of warranty car is a bit...disconcerting.

JV or FC or anyone else, can you provide any sort of reality check (or link to resources you might have come across in your own research)?

EDITED to clarify applicability--the new 9A1 engine (2009+) doesn't have the IMS, but isn't DFI in all applications.
