I have the 8AT on the M240, and it's the best auto I've had. That said, the MT would likely be more fun, but I have an arthritic left knee so I doubt I'll ever get back in a manual car.

One caveat is that the new MTs rev match, which might feel pretty strange after 4 decades of regular manual driving.

WRT to the four cylinder 228/230, I've read lots of laments about turbo lag. That would only be more pronounced with an AT, I imagine, and the weight of AWD.

Yes. When I test drove an M4 it was driving me nuts because I did not know it did that and I was attempting to rev-match myself. Don't know about vanilla BMW's but on the F8X you can disable it by changing the setting to sport+.

I feel the same way. The only cars that appeal to me are the M3 (& maybe the M2) and frankly that's largely due to the MT availability. Otherwise, I may have gone with a MB (or the upcoming Jag XE SVR).

If they could only build a car that doesn't break on the trailer.

I think even the Porsches rev match these days...

If they're worried about product dilution, maybe BMW should take a hard look at their model scheme and cut things way the hell back. When they first broke down the coupe and sedan variants of the same platform into different models, I thought that was just mildly confusing...but when they then started to produce four-door "coupes" I realized they were bonkers.

I think that's the master plan. But they'll start by trimming engines first. The 4 cylinder 30; the 6 cylinder 40; and V8. With very few MTs in that mix. Added on top an M variant of each model.

I never understood this either.

I figured BMW knew what they were doing, but given their sales figures maybe not.

Even worse are the jacked up four door crossover "coupes" like the X4. I don't understand the point of these fugly things.
