Boxster clutch woes

Thankfully not mine...

A friend with a 986S said his clutch pedal dropped to the floor. Then it came up and got very stiff... To me this sounds like a hydraulics issue. His shop told him he needs a new clutch to the tune of $3500. That does not include IMS (which would bring it up to $6k or so).
1) Shouldn't hydraulics/cylinders/lines/fluid get checked first? He had no memory of revs rising or hot moments for this street driven car (I think around 75k miles)
2) Even with a whole new clutch, this comes out 80% or so higher than I would have guessed. He is in the Scottsdale, AZ area.

Thoughts?

That doesn't seem bad to me for a Porsche figuring my VW dealer quoted $4k for a Golf GTI clutch.

Sounds like pressure plate failure. If the hydraulics are stiff, that generally means they are fine.

Right, if it got stiff afterwards it's holding pressure.

But yeah $3.5k is not unreasonable. It's still a Porsche and if you don't want to fix it yourself you gotta pay.
