The newer Minis are light years more refined than the old ones. They’ve also, as a result, lost a great deal of what made the R56 special, at least in my mind; they’re a lot more like Golfs these days in both good and bad ways.
That said, if Ms. FC likes it, I am definitely not trying to harsh her buzz. I don’t think you’re going to like it as much as the R56, but it’s not your car so it doesn’t matter. If she likes it you should get it! |

The S has a 2 liter four, though. Neither the 1.5 nor the 2.0 are particularly power dense in this application, but they do have a lot of torque down low.

Called around today, and it turns out that there is one other MT car at another dealer and 3 automatics a the Boston dealer. So maybe it's not quite so hard to find for now, though production for that model has ended, AFAIK.
For some reason, my wife seems to prefer getting an automatic. Again, her car, not mine, so if it makes her happier, so be it. The good news is that with three of them in stock, we can wait until the end of the month or possibly even the end of the year to pull the trigger. But we will go test drive one of those this coming weekend. |

I can’t really imagine my car being more fun with a manual, frankly. It would need to be smaller, edgier, and more nimble to be worth it. Like a Boxster, for instance… |

The full torque being available so freakin' low in the rpm range certainly helps with an automatic. EDIT: Also, FWIW, I should stop calling it an "automatic," since it is a 7-speed DCT. Last edited by FC; 11-12-2023 at 10:48 PM. |
