The base Jetta isn't going to satisfy anyone on this board as a daily driver, even if it is surprisingly competent at doing the things people buy cars to do.

I haven't driven a GLI, but my guess is with 70ish additional hp and stiffened up suspension tuning, it might indeed make a satisfactory commuter. Definitely worth a drive, and the reviews are good, too.

As to whether to buy a new or used one? Pre-2022, there was a lower (and cheaper) entry level trim for the GLI, and the car started around 27. They dropped that entry level model, so the only GLI now is the loaded version starting at 31. If you want the less well equipped car, you might save some money going used--if you can find one and if the used market isn't still nuts.

Just poking around, though, I don't see any new ones available around here. Used prices on base Jettas have moderated a touch but still seem high enough that a new one seems like the right move. I assume the same is true for GLIs.

I’m dumb and didn’t realize the Jetta that you have is not the GLI with the uprated motor. I thought the motor was standard across the line. So I get why you’re saying it might be less satisfying from a fun to drive aspect.

I will find time to try to drive a CPO GLI this weekend then!

Manuals are hard to come by but they do exist here in these parts.

I imagine the GLI has a half-decent manual uptake as well.

Car and Driver reviews the Jetta Sport and comes away feeling basically the same way I do.

Plus 44 mpg in their 75 mph test. And honestly, speaking of comparisons to the 80s? This thing is nearly as quick as a fair number of sports coupes back then.

Lol it’s actually just as fast to 60 as the 1989 Probe GT, is faster in the quarter, is more than a second faster to 100, has a lot more grip, and stops from 70 in 20 fewer feet. Those last stats are probably tires more than anything else, but still—these are basic all seasons.

Oh and it gets 50 percent better gas mileage (C/D observed).

wow- didn't realize the probe was that quick... 0-60 in 7 seconds was downright fast for 89.

I just authorized $4200 of repairs to the S4.

This post is making me want a 2023 Jetta Sport.

1. Full Detail
2. Brake fluid
3. Oil change, inspection, etc.
4. Front lower wishbone bushings leaking/coming apart - new bushings
5. New front sway bar links
6. Airbox pipe to throttle body detached - replace pipe
7. Alignment
8. Leaking valve cover gasket - replace; explains why it's burning oil
