Yeah, the base Jetta does not have those things (and because of supply chain, does not even have blind spot warning). It was easy to permanently disable in the 2017 Golf R but the Internets suggest they’ve made it impossible to defeat in newer cars.

Following this thread closely.

It’s really difficult to get a “simple” car with an engine that has decent torque from a frugal engine plus a true manual.

Now that you mention it, the GLI prob fits the bill better. Just want a reasonable car for commuting in mostly highway traffic across SoCal.

Your feedback on the clutch and the rest is very helpful. Thanks.

Yeah the GLI seems like a good bet for that. Normal controls, good power, reasonable space, reasonable styling

Yup, my BIL has the twin of my GTI but in GLI version (down to the color). I drove it. Good car. I prefer the the interior and chassis of the GTI more, but the GLI has a roomier back seat and a bigger covered trunk. FYI, our 2021 GTI just crossed 20k miles (in ~22 months) and has been flawless (knocking on wood).

I hope the Jetta is better than the (I presume fairly new) Passat I rented a month or so ago in SFO. Was not impressed with much of anything with the car... Seats not comfortable, the electronic nannies could not be turned off. No Nav... Paltry storage in the console for 'stuff' - wallet, keys, phones and such....

The car drove 'ok' - but nothing to write home about.

For commuting, yes — I am not sure how long I’m keeping the 991 at and there’s a mileage maximum really to keep the car in the sweet spot of value retention.
