When my parents E32 was being shipped from Germany to the US (Ventura, CA) from European delivery... back in 1994... The car was at the port there for over two months. My brothers wedding was coming up and that was 'the car' that the couple was to use as their escape vehicle.
The dealership was not giving my dad much info. Finally - a week before the wedding, he shows up there with his lawyer and demands to know what is going on with his car (that he has bought and paid for). They make a few calls (with him there) and find out that the car was found damaged. Evidently, someone wanted the stereo and broke the glass to get to it. They didn't actually get the stereo out of it, but they did make a mess of the dash and one of the passenger door windows. We were given a new 5 series (E34 I think) to use in place of the 7 till the car came in. We received the car about 3 weeks later. Evidently, they had to wait for parts to complete the work. The way they handled that left a bad taste in my fathers memory. When he told me he got the E38 a few years later - that suprised me as I figured he would go back to Mercedes. But - as the car he bought was on the lot already, he knew it was in good shape (in his mindset anyway). And that E38 is the one I have to this day 22 years later.

Oh wow. Yeah that would’ve left a bad taste in my mouth. I remember reading some ED horror stories before I did mine in 2011 but if it were still offered today I’d be tempted. Such a fun experience Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Right. I think a lesson here is that we don't even think about whether the "new" car on the lot was damaged and repaired before it got there...

Back in the day (2002) when I ordered the E46 wagon I had to show the salesman how to call up the "port report" (or whatever it was called) that listed any work the VPC did when the car came off the transport ship.

Deal is below MSRP, and Mazda still has 0.9% financing for 36 months (I considered paying cash — but I can park it in money market and earn a bit more…) Turns out the delay is supply chain related. The original VIN is still at port waiting for a port-installed accessory. Seems like they are trickling out to dealers…. The car was not damaged… Excited. But it will be weird to pump gas again…
