I love the concept of the RENNTechs, but every time I read about one I'm reminded of Don Schroeder at Car and Driver, who died testing one.

I had a friend who lived across the street from him (in the Detroit house mentioned in the story), and I met him a few times. I think I probably irritated him because meeting him was like meeting a genuine celebrity for me. But he was a genuinely nice guy, and boy that death hit close to home.

Oh man, I remember liking him a lot and was really sad when I read about his death. As a MB fan boy I felt C&D always had a crush on BMW and he seemed to at least like MB more than most at C&D. At least that's how I remember it.

I can't believe you knew him!

Ha yes, he was great to talk to--the guy I knew threw fairly big parties, and he was generally in attendance. This was in the Boston Edison neighborhood of Detroit, which is full of giant old mansions from the 20s and 30s, and in the early 90s was surrounded by some pretty rough areas; it was an extremely cool place to live.

I was gobsmacked to talk to a real life C/D writer; he was the first one I'd met despite growing up in Detroit and going to school in Ann Arbor.

He died so young. Yikes. Just 35.

I was going to say I don't think I've ever seen a green M5 before, but then I realized I have a vague memory of actually driving one back in the day at that place in Manassas. It's a neat color on the E39.

Also, I kind of love this.

The targa mechanism looks goofy as fuck and scary as hell, but it's such a weird car that it has a certain appeal.
