You can't get a temp tag from either MD or CA?

AZ has a "30-day general use permit" -- which is issued online and printed at home. $15. Does MD or CA have anything similar?

Unless there is something I don't understand with getting it registered in MD when it gets here, I would think the risk is very small, but of course, I'm not the one taking it on.

Even if you did get pulled over, I would hope that any officer would let you slide after telling him/her the story of picking up your Dad's car, driving cross country with your daughter, all of us living vicariously through her video blog, etc.

Heck, if the cop wants to check your story, just give him this link. We'll all vouch for you.

(I am writing this while on hold with CA DMV waiting for an agent that hopefully will be able to tell me what I can do to drive the car home legally come Saturday.)

From what I've found so far, there is no way I can leave California in the car legally on Saturday without taking my mom to the DMV. All other options (CA only or including MD) involve mail, and processing times and I don't have time for that at this stage.

To get a sticker or temp permit, I don't see any way around visiting the DMV. Until I speak to someone, I'm not sure that will be enough either. OTOH, taking her there will allow us to get a few other things sorted out as well.

He always looked kind of beige/tan/toffee colored in the pictures I've seen. I'm not sure that is white enough for Southern States to count it.

Anyway, after 45 minutes on hold, a DMV agent just told me if the car passes smog and we bring all the appropriate paperwork to DMV, we can walk out with a valid registration, so there's hope....if it passes smog.

There is truth to this, but not just southern states. Border Patrol has thought I looked close enough to being Mexican to stop me at checkpoints a number of times.

Also, being Jewish makes me a non-white to certain groups.
