Speaking of which, a quick thread steal: Is there any reason why I should consider buying my ex’s 2016 X50i? My head says no (expensive to maintain down the road). It has abut 35k miles, but I wouldn’t put much on. It has Sport, adaptive drive, dampers, spare, etc. Upgraded back seats. After market Invisihitch...I think her Carvana price was $32k. Steel Gray (or whatever it was called) and Oyster—ceramic controls, leather dash.

You know the car, the maintenance, history, etc. You seemed to really like it. I'm guessing $32k is a fair price. Probably lower risk than buying anything off the street + its optioned the way you want it (I assume since you bought it once already).
If you're really worried about maintenance price out a fidelity warranty.

Good points. Also, son has an attachment to it. Do kind of hate to pau tax (and tags) on it twice. Sigh.

Okay. Back to Zach's new X7! (Or maybe I should buy back our old 5 wagon from his dad!)

Would this be something to keep long-term?

My personal opinions on long-term modern BMW ownership are well-known, so I'd say no. But if you have a trustworthy indie shop that is willing to work on the thing, and a fairly deep bank account, sure?

It will likely be a more $$ on maintenance vs. some of the other cars you’re considering, but I don’t exactly consider Audis to be super reliable either so I’m guessing not too much worse.

The main items here would be the V8 and the suspension bits. But those are also the things that make it special so I guess you need to pay to play! I will say the updated V8 in the 2016 does appear to be better than earlier versions (I forget the designations but I think the one from earlier model years that had the service campaign was N62 and this is N62TU or N62TU2).

At $32k that actually feels like a number where I’d seriously consider this option. A similar 2017 off-lease at retail price would be mid/upper-40s. Gives you room to save away a few thousand into a mental maintenance fund.

On tax topic - are you legally separated already / would your state allow her to “gift” the car to you?

We are divorced and we've retitled cars in our own names. So, my guess is no.
