Time for a boat thread and an ethanol thread, I think.

Trying to find the specs on those engines, just because I was curious, but boat ads are even worse than Facebook marketplace ads in terms of detail.

Pretty sure this is a twin of the last boat my folks had on the Great Lakes. Twin 454s but only 350 hp from each. I think they also offered diesels but as with pickup trucks it was a huge upcharge.

Basically a floating RV. I never really understood the appeal, but it was fun to go out on every now and then.

The idea of boats is cool but they are so expensive and time-consuming to keep and operate that I could not be excited about them besides maybe a small boat if I had water-front property.

Regarding the brakes, they are very bizarre. They have decent initial bite, but as you lean into the pedal more the friction and stopping power feel about the same. Very non-linear. I started doing research into what aftermarket pads would fit back before COVID, but then gave up because our use of the car became so infrequent and we discussed selling it. Let me dig some more and see what I can find, because I agree the factory brake feel is sub-par. There was a pretty affordable set of StopTech pads that looked like a good option.

Be careful in rain - the factory Toyos are abysmal in rain, even at full tread-depth. Another thing I planned to replace, but then didn't because of the reasons above. They also don't have much dry grip.
Just checked and my Toyos are the A36. May or may not be an improvement over the A23s that probably came on your car--or maybe you had the A36s as well.

Only 350hp because aren't built to rev. Boats are meant to spend a lot of time at peak power, and engines don't last if they're turning 7,000 RPM all day long.

Boats are like pools. They're something you want a good friend of yours to own.

Yup, my Merc 350 was a painted chevy 350. in NJ, I had to remove the carb at the end of season to store it indoors. Or leave it on, and rebuild it each spring. It would not survive a NJ winter outside

A36s on ours. Yet another in a long line of Toyo tires that does absolutely nothing well.

I'm sure Mazda got a great deal on them. They do wear like iron at least.

If I recall correctly, that Merc got two top end rebuilds due to sitting. Luckily we had a great local boat mechanic. (Hilarious redneck. Also, he had a 15' bass boat with a 250hp Mercury outboard on it. I got a ride in that once and it was insane.)
