I've actually driven a few of those, but with 5th wheel hauler beds. They are actually very comfy to drive, with air suspension and air seats.

Buying a new one requires a special kind of stupid or twisted status symbol, as the FET is outrageous on new, big trucks. (Federal Excise Tax is 15-18%, and those start at 158K and up)

What's the reasoning for discouraging new truck purchases?

I have an uncle who sells trucks. Last I heard he was doing just fine.

I imagine there's plenty of accounting/tax loopholes at work.

Maybe things have changed, but back in 2008 when I was looking at them, they were considered a commercial use purchase.

If you go into a Volvo, Freightliner or Peterbuilt dealer and try to purchase a brand new class 7-9 truck, you are looking at FET taxes

There used to be over 40 Sportchassis dealers in the USA. Maybe were shut down buy the Feds for not collecting FET when new sales were made. I think there are about a dozen dealers left today

I wanted one of those so badly when they came out!

Wikipedia isn't so kind though.

"It's the lack of weight that makes the Ferrari so exciting. There's nothing else magic about the car at all...They're asking two- and three-inch-diameter steel tubes at chassis base datum level to do all the work, and it shows - you can feel the chassis flexing on the circuit and it wobbles all over the place on the road. It really does shake about. And, of course, once you excite the chassis the door panels start rattling and squeaking. Whereas the other cars feel taut and solid, this one's like a big go-kart with a plastic body on it."

[...]

Car and Driver*called the car a "mix of sheer terror and raw excitement". Most fun was accelerating in first gear from 15*mph, "pure terror" was driving on a busy highway. Rear vision was so bad that lane changes required "leaps of faith". It was found unfit for daily road use, "clunky and cantankerous" around town, "so mechanically delinquent that an onboard mechanic is advised", to describe driver discomfort "Bangkok debtors' prison" was used.

[...]

Ferrari F40 wasn't found competitive because of being a 30-minute car. "After that, you'd like a cool drink and a brief nap."

I had f40 posters on my wall as a kid too. The below pic could easily be a self portrait of a 10yr old me...
