At 83-ish thousand miles now, and suspect either water pump or thermostat (or both) have shit the bed.

Repeated overheating yesterday, though oil temp remained steady. Limped home pulling over intermittently for cool-downs. Hope to get in somewhere tomorrow for servicing.

Ugh. Hitting those high-mileage car blues. Might as well go ahead and book JV in advance for the makeover...

80k. The magic number where BMW cooling systems magically know how to fail.

The water pump on the N52 is a work of overengineered German art. I don't know if the turbo engines are similar but I imagine they are.

It looks like a little electric turbo!

That is pretty. Too bad they didn't over engineer them to last over 100K miles.

My 1er water pump went at 33k miles. The one on the e61 went at about 92. The thermostat gets replaced with the pump

WTF!? 80K is one thing. 33k is ridiculous.

Do other manufacturers have difficult of a time making / sourcing a water pump?

Our X3 made it maybe ~40k miles on the water pump before it died. But hey, it's electric so it saves like .3 miles per gallon, and extra bonus, it costs a fortune to replace.
