They always looked like grandpa cars to me. Very stodgy and bland even when they were new.

To each their own. The interiors, amazing ergonomics and visibility aside, look dated now for sure, but the exterior lines and proportions are beautiful still today.

I am thinking of a 500E/E500 (or the 400) for when it is time to let go of the E38. Hell - I am even thinking of a nice W124 coupe as well.... Now - if they had put the V8 in the coupe...

I’m with you on this one, my father had the first e class back in the day I think it was 1986 and while it was a great car with a lot of new features (wasn’t it one of the first cars with ABS brakes) he traded it for a 560sec a year later .. now that car was a beast in its day.

I had a friend in HS whose dad drove a mid 80s 450 SEL; she let me drive it once and it felt a lot like the Grand Marquis my other friend had.

Similarly a gf’s mom had a 300SD…it was slow but I thought there was something very special about the way it felt going down the road. Not sure I’ve driven anything else quite like it.. also remember how heavy those doors were and the way the vacuum actuated power locks would glide smoothly up and down . Mind you I was driving an 82 Volvo wagon at the time that felt like a tractor in comparison
