I hadn’t been paying attention to the RAV4 updates. Just looked at some pics of the ‘19s. I see Toyota put on the nasty ugly front end similar to the 4Runner. The rest doesn’t look all that bad, but the front end is nasty...

Did you check out the Hyundai kona? I know nothing about it, but I noticed yesterday they are everywhere, so maybe they have redeeming qualities.
If gas mileage is a thing... How about a diesel wagon? https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...ting=216208322

He said upthread that diesel is a no go and passed on two of my excellent diesel suggestions, sadly.

Oh, I know. I just think back to when my Mother passed away and I had to drive her Prius from the Washington Olympic peninsula to my house in NJ. I barely got over 30 miles per gallon. Sure, I was loaded with all my Mothers papers, and records; and I drove as fast as I thought I could get away with. (even though this trip was back in 2007, I still will never own a prius) The car was then given to my brother and his wife. They only drove it around town to 45-50 MPG

The Kona is in the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3 (and Golf Sportwagen :P) size class, which is one class too small. Quote:
In light of day, my wife's decided the RAV4 hybrid is the car for her and I think we just decided to go with new. Styling issues (and their associated gnawing into "bland, anonymous, forgettable, unassuming," qualities and increased self-consciousness) aside, the other main differences are near 40% increase in range (20% better MPG and 18% larger tank), LED headlights with auto high beams, dynamic cruise and Toyota's safety suite (which is all the stuff you think it is and something most of us would find infuriating, but maybe helpful for my wife?) The adventure continues.
