You can't take own car for work (and expense it at some standard per mile rate)?

The reason I drove is because I had to hand carry a delicate instrument (a prototype) that we could not risk UPS/Fedex to beat the shit out of (at least not on the way there, we can tolerate the risk on the way back). I'll be flying back from Pittsburgh, so I am ditching the rental. Also, this instrument is long, and it would not have easily fit on the mini.
