The GN/GNX were nuts in a way I appreciated, like the Typhoon/Syclone.
The Monte Carlos were unattractive try hard pieces of shit bought by the kind of people who think they’re car people but are definitely not car people. And what I really hated about it was how fucking lazy it was. This was a time when the American car industry was getting its clock cleaned by imports from Germany and Japan and *this* was GMs response?? Look at that fucking interior. LOOK AT IT. Fuck everyone involved with this bullshit. It’s the definition of phoning it in. JV gives me a lot of shit for being a Ford fanboy, which is fair, but a lot of it is explained by this fucking car. In 1986, at least Ford was *trying.* GM was doing...this. God, take all of these benighted pieces of crap and dump them in the ocean. |

For what it’s worth, I have the same reaction to the first generation US Escort and the Tempo, too.

Categorically, I'll just say that there are very few 80's car that ever interested me. The Germans are basically the only ones who made appealing cars, IMO. And MB more so than the others.
But yes, that Monte Carlo has always been a car for which I could never understand a following. |

Fil is of the opinion that first was mostly useless with that gearing. I don’t really agree, but I can see his perspective. The lack of a 6th gear is the real problem on that thing.

I'm not going to take a position that the G bodies were anything but complete piles of shit, because they were. I think the reason people like them today is one part nostalgia, one part "it's RWD" and one part "it has a V8." The resto-mod scene for these piles is HUGE. I don't get it either, but my family exclusively owned imports in the 80's (including an E30 318 that was possibly the worst car BMW ever built). Similarly... nostalgia / V8 / RWD are the only reasons people still look back wistfully at the Fox cars. They were fucking awful. Ford's interiors were easily as bad as the GM stuff back then, sorry. The Fox cars were more fun because the handling was so bad, even with Ford's anemic "H.O." 4.9L under the hood they were challenging to drive, so any time you made it home was a victory. |

Still miss them. Tons of nostalgia. Don't think I'd want to act on that, though. See first post in this thread.
