I saw your post at TMC (yesterday?)... Haven't commented there yet -- but I will wait until the final release before commenting...

There are parts of the leaked UI that I like. But agree the energy meter being moved off the speedo will be very annoying. Some of the other info being removed is just odd. And the analog clock is just plain dumb and ugly. If some of those aren't reverted (especially the energy meter...), I will voraciously complain...

This is the really long thread where it is discussed most comprehensively:

And here's a slightly shorter thread where people are complaining:

That's a lot to wade through just for pics/video of the old vs new.

True. If I have some time later I will try and dig up a direct link.

If it's not easy, it's probably not worth the effort. I'm just really intrigued by your reaction to e possibility.

This video shows the new UI. Skip to 1:15 or so.

http://www.TeslaMotorsClub.com/showpost.php?p=1180563

I don't have a video handy of the "before," but amongst the information that has been removed from the main screen are:

Power use/regen
Analog speedometer ring
Date
Time
Temp

In addition, the battery display has both reduced prominence and less detail.

In the user selectable side displays, the power usage graph has reduced detail (and has a much shittier version of the power meter integrated).

The trip odometer has lost the A and B function.

In exchange, what we get is a toy car in dead center of the screen. For vehicles with autopilot hardware (the software is still unreleased), this ostensibly will provide an overview of what the car's sensors are picking up. It's not clear what the driver is supposed to do with that information, though.

For cars like mine, which don't have any of that hardware, there's nothing to use the toy car to display other than headlight and brake light status.

Yeah, that doesn't look a move in the right direction. OTOH, if I were a Camry driver, I'd probably love it.

I think that the people that have been speculating that it's designed as hand-holding to convince people that Autopilot (AP) is safe and can see its surroundings are spot on. As I said above, I don't think any of the info being displayed has any practical utility--I don't think you can really compare your view of the environment around you in real time with that on the display and think you are going to take over if something is amiss. But this gives you comfort that the car is actually seeing stuff around you.

All of that is fine. I'm just pissed that a) none of it applies to me, and b) it looks like they are going to give me the UI overhaul anyway.* I'm reserving judgment until that actually happens, though.

*This isn't confirmed, but no one has leaked any shots of a different UI for non AP cars (or for when AP is not engaged), and the release notes that have been leaked don't talk about any differences, and some of the people who've received the new UI (apparently by mistake, which is another issue) have not had AP hardware.
