moving to mid-ship territory

there are 2 options for RS60 987s and many 987 S models.

am going to test drive them this weekend and if all goes well, this will probably be a reality pretty soon (MX5 replacement).

I guess the main question I have is: is there anything rationally compelling about the RS60 models versus standard Boxster S models in the same year?

They had a little more power (5 or 10 hp?). But other than that, not really--mostly a trim package.

Good luck with test drives. I'm sure you'll like them!

Didn't they have a (very) minor suspension tweak also? Not sure if it did much though...

Here's the official word:

http://press.porsche.com/news/release.php?id=400

Sounds like spacers and PASM (which I really don't have any use for).

Quote:

The new Boxster RS 60 Spyder evokes the stance and style of this historic mid-engine two-seater race car. Its front end is taken from Porsche's SportDesign Package and distinguishes the RS 60 Spyder significantly from the current Boxster S. Its posture is made even more dynamic with the addition of spacer plates that move the 19-inch Porsche SportDesign wheels into an even more prominent position in the wheel arches. Likewise, the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is standard on this limited edition model and ensures both sporting and comfortable driving characteristics in all conditions. Modifications to the exhaust flow coupled with a dual tailpipe sports exhaust system increase engine output to 303 hp.

303hp would be a downgrade as compared to a regular 987.2 S.

Edit: Just realized that the RS60 was a 2007 model, so it never was on my radar.

Yes, it would. It was a bump over the 3.4L M97 that came in the 2007-08 models, but the 2009+ 987.2 9A1 engine had more power.

Correct... "Regular S" 2007-08 models had ~295 HP...

is this 2008 engine in one of the run of "bad" years, though? or okay?

there are plenty of 2009+ cars, too, on the market.

I had a 2008 Boxster S. No engine problems whatsoever. I put about 40k on it (bought it with 4k on it...)
