My Aunt is moving after 30+ years and so I needed to pack up my sand rail. Given that I haven't run it in over a decade I figured it best to bring it home as it'll make it easier to sell.

The engine can be turned by hand so it's not frozen or stuck. But the fuel in the gas tank has evaporated after the last decade (I wonder what the injectors and rest of the fuel system is like), the batteries are shot, the 4-point racing harness need to be replaced, and some of the linkages are . . . . very stiff with rust. That and there is some oxidation on the aluminum engine and transmission housing. Surprisingly, the rattle-can spray paint job I did on it has held up remarkably well.

I'll try to get the engine fired up soon as it'll probably make it easier to sell.

Now, to figure out the best way to bring it back to life. . . .

That thing looks like a ton of fun. Are there open places to drive it around you?

It IS a ton of fun but places to drive it are partly why I'm selling it. :banged:

I should have thought more carefully about the logistics of running it before I built it. The closest places to run the sand rail around Seattle is partway down on the Oregon coast at Sand Lake, OR. It's about a 6-8 hr drive down there plus set up time. Reverse that to pack up and head home and then figure you'll need at least 2 days to make the trip worth while.

Oh, and you need to have a tow vehicle, trailer, place to store it, etc. etc. etc.

In theory carving out 4 days to go play on the dunes doesn't sound like that big of a deal but life got busy and I realized I really enjoyed Jeeping on the local trails (which are 1-2 hrs from home). So, uh, after the inaugural dune run I've not driven the sand rail since. It's been sitting unloved the whole time. Which is stupid for a project I spent 2 1/2 years working on and about $9k in funding.

Live and learn I suppose . . .

Is that just north of Coos Bay?? I remember seeing what looked like a great place for sand rails there.

The "good" places to ride in Oregon are Coos Bay and Florence which are toward the southern 1/3 of the OR coast. Slightly closer to home is a place called Sand Lake which is just south of Tillamook, OR. It's fun but also about 1/10th the area of either Coos Bay or Florence dunes. This is the only place I've ever run any offload rigs in OR.

In WA state there is the Pot Holes Reservoir ORV area south of Moses Lake but the "sand" is really rocky and chews hell out of frames and whatever gets sand blasted from what the tires kick up.

Further east is a place call St. Anthonys in ID which is in the SE corner of the state not far from the border with Wyoming.

What year is that again- '99? '00? Not bad for a 16+ year old car!
